A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
