"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're not alone. Several famous supporters have also begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos often feature them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Award Milestone

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a new sound – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

Yet Haim will always be their primary priority.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
